Free Vintage Spider Printables from an 1834 Natural History Book
If you like your Halloween crafts a little less cartoonish and a lot more wonderfully strange, these free vintage spider printables are for you. The two collage sheets in this giveaway feature detailed spider illustrations from The Animal Kingdom, Arranged According to its Organization, Serving as a Foundation for the Natural History of Animals and an Introduction to Comparative Anatomy, a 19th-century natural history work published in 1834.
The illustrations have the look of old scientific specimen plates, complete with finely rendered legs, bodies, markings, and occasional diagrams. They are perfect for Halloween junk journals, gothic collage, nature journals, altered books, and all sorts of mixed media projects.
I created two printable sheets from the vintage artwork: one with larger 2.5 x 4.25-inch pieces and another with smaller 2 x 3-inch pieces.

The History Behind These Spider Illustrations
The source for these printables is The Animal Kingdom, a major natural history work associated with French zoologist Georges Cuvier and naturalist Pierre André Latreille. The Biodiversity Heritage Library catalogs Volume 3 as covering “Mollusca, Annelides, Crustacea, Arachnides, and Insecta,” with publication information for London publisher G. Henderson in 1834.
For this particular project, the Arachnids material is the interesting part. Spiders were being documented as part of the broader effort to classify and understand the animal kingdom, and illustrations were an important part of that process.
These aren't Halloween illustrations in the historical sense. They were created as scientific and educational imagery. That's actually what makes them so useful for Halloween crafts today. Their detailed anatomy, unusual shapes, and aged paper tones can give a Halloween project a completely different look from modern seasonal clip art.
The Biodiversity Heritage Library currently identifies the 1834 volume as public domain, making this kind of historical material especially interesting for artists and crafters looking for source material from old books.

What's Included in the Free Spider Collage Sheets?
I've created two printable sheets from the vintage spider illustrations.
The 2.5 x 4.25-inch sheet features larger specimen-style images that work particularly well as journal cards, focal points, or standalone pieces of ephemera.
The 2 x 3-inch sheet contains smaller spider illustrations that are easy to cut apart and use as individual embellishments.
You'll find imagery featuring:
Detailed spider specimens
Different spider body shapes and markings
Spiders shown individually and in groups
Spider web imagery
Scientific-style specimen arrangements
Fine anatomical details and vintage engraving textures
Original-style captions and plate details
The variety makes these sheets useful even if you're not making a specifically Halloween-themed project.
Try pairing the spiders with old botanical illustrations, handwritten text, botanical scraps, book pages, mushrooms, moths, or other natural-history imagery.
And yes, the images can be used for both printable crafts and digital design projects.

What Are These Vintage Spider Printables?
These vintage spider printables are digital images featuring historical spider illustrations that have been formatted for printing and use in creative projects. Instead of searching through old natural history books and trying to reproduce the artwork yourself, you can print the prepared collage sheets, cut out the individual images, and incorporate them into your project.
These particular spider images come from 19th-century natural history illustration, a tradition in which artists created detailed images of animals and other organisms for scientific books and reference works.
The result is artwork that works surprisingly well outside of its original scientific setting. A spider specimen can become a journal card, an ATC, a collage focal point, a Halloween embellishment, or an unusual element in a botanical or nature-themed spread.
Creative Ways to Use Vintage Spider Images
Spiders have strong visual shapes, which makes them especially good for collage. Their long legs can extend across a page, fit into narrow spaces, or overlap other pieces of ephemera.
Junk Journals - Use the larger pieces as journal cards, tuck-ins, or focal images. The smaller spiders can be layered with scraps of book paper, labels, botanical images, and handwritten journaling.
Halloween Crafts - For a Halloween journal or handmade card, combine the spiders with black-and-white paper, old handwriting, vintage Halloween postcards, bats, cats, or apothecary labels.
Artist Trading Cards - The smaller 2 x 3-inch pieces are a natural fit for ATC projects. Add a decorative border, handwritten title, or additional collage elements to create a tiny specimen-style artwork.
Altered Books - A vintage scientific spider illustration can make an unexpected addition to an altered book. Try placing one alongside a page of handwritten text or a botanical illustration.
Scrapbooking - Use the larger images as focal points rather than treating them as simple embellishments. They can add an unusual natural-history element to Halloween, nature, camping, or autumn scrapbook layouts.
Handmade Cards & Tags - Cut out individual specimens and layer them onto cardstock to create Halloween cards, gift tags, journal tabs, or decorative labels.
Use These Images for Digital Art & Design
You don't have to print these spider illustrations to use them. The high-resolution files can also be incorporated into digital collage, digital scrapbooking, and graphic design.
They can be opened and edited in programs such as Canva, Procreate, or Photoshop, depending on how you like to work.
Some digital project ideas include:
Digital junk journal pages
Digital collage artwork
Halloween social media graphics
Printable wall art
Digital scrapbook layouts
Journal and planner pages
Website or blog graphics
Gothic or natural-history-inspired designs
A few practical tips:
Crop individual spiders from the sheet when you want to use just one specimen.
Layer the illustrations over old paper textures, handwriting, botanical artwork, or other public-domain elements.
Adjust transparency or blending modes to make the artwork look integrated into a digital background rather than pasted on top.
Try desaturating or slightly adjusting the contrast if you want the illustrations to blend with a particular digital color palette.
Because the original source artwork is public domain in the United States, it can provide useful source material for your own creative compositions. Just remember that the collage sheets themselves are my original compilations, which have separate usage restrictions.

Public Domain & How You Can Use the Sheets
The original Animal Kingdom volume used for these illustrations is identified as public domain by the Biodiversity Heritage Library.
I've taken that historical artwork and created new printable collage-sheet arrangements from it.
You are welcome to use the images from these collage sheets for personal or commercial creative projects. That includes things such as artwork, junk journals, scrapbooks, collage pieces, handmade cards, and other finished creative projects that you make yourself.
You can also use the images in digital projects, provided you're incorporating them into your own design rather than simply passing along the collage sheet.
The important distinction is this:
You may use the images creatively, but you may not sell or redistribute the complete collage sheets "as is," either digitally or in printed form.
If you want to share these printables with someone else, please send them back to this page rather than uploading the files to another website.
As with any public-domain material, copyright status can vary by country and by the particular source or reproduction, so check the laws that apply to your project if you're working commercially.
Why Spiders Are Perfect for Halloween Crafts
Spiders are one of those subjects that naturally show up in Halloween crafting year after year. As soon as autumn arrives, people start looking for spider webs, black cats, bats, creepy specimens, apothecary imagery, and other darker motifs for seasonal projects.
But you don't have to put these away after October.
The natural-history style makes these spider illustrations useful throughout the year for woodland journals, science-inspired artwork, gothic collage, nature journals, altered books, and specimen-themed projects.
That makes them a little more versatile than typical Halloween clip art. You can use them heavily in October and then incorporate the remaining pieces into completely different projects later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these vintage spider illustrations public domain?
The 1834 Animal Kingdom volume from which these illustrations were sourced is identified as public domain by the Biodiversity Heritage Library. The collage sheets themselves are original compilations created for The Art Scavenger.

Yes. You can use the images from the collage sheets in your own personal or commercial creative projects, including finished artwork and handmade items that you create. You may not sell or redistribute the complete collage sheets as-is.
What paper should I use to print the spider collage sheets?

Final Thoughts
I love finding old natural-history illustrations that were originally created for scientific books and giving them a completely different life in modern creative projects.

Whether you're making a Halloween junk journal, an ATC collection, a gothic art journal, or a digital collage, I hope you find a few spiders here that make their way into your next project.
