Conspicuous flowers? I know, the name of this page is kind of funny, but in my defense, it’s derived from the name of the book from which the flower illustrations in these printable collage sheets came. It was entitled Flora Conspicua and was printed in 1826. The book covers “a selection of the most ornamental flowering, hardy, exotic and indigenous trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, for embellishing flower-gardens and pleasure-grounds.” Pleasure-grounds? I was not familiar with the concept of a pleasure-ground. I very hesitantly typed it into Google, bracing myself for the results that might return. As it turns out, I needn’t worry. It sounds like the term referred to an ornamental garden, usually adjacent to the house. These flowers would, in fact, make a very conspicuous addition to such a garden.
I made a collage sheet of 2” x 3” journal tags, and a collage sheet of 1” x 2” dominoes because I realized I’ve been lazy recently and hadn’t made any in a while. I don’t make any dominoes jewelry, but I do like having smaller images for those moments when you need just a little something in a layout.

This sunflower from the free Conspicuous Flowers collage sheet was the perfect centerpiece for this art journal page. I built the background with a bright painted background, torn collage papers, and playful gold mark-making to echo the joyful energy of the flower itself. I love how the vintage illustration holds its own against the colorful textures. It really draws your eye right in. To balance the page, I added one of the sweet bird images from one of the cute birds collage sheets, which complements the natural theme while letting the sunflower shine. These flower printables are so easy to use as focal points in your spreads. They instantly add warmth, charm, and a splash of vintage beauty.
